Allscripts - definition(s)

Allscripts - Allscripts is the brand name of Chicago-based AllscriptsMisys Healthcare Solutions Inc., which was formed in 2008 by the merger of part of Allscripts Healthcare Solutions Inc. with London-based Misys Healthcare Systems LLC.

Allscripts got its start in 1986 by selling prepackaged medications for physicians to dispense at the point of care. The company unveiled its first software product, an e-prescribing system, in 1998; through acquisitions in 2001, 2006 and 2008, Allscripts added electronic health record (EHR), practice management (PM) and care management systems, respectively. Misys, meanwhile, brought its PM software to the United States in the late 1990s and added home health and revenue cycle management systems following acquisitions in 2002 and 2005, respectively.

Allscripts now develops and sells software and services to various types of health care providers.

   * For individual practices with three or fewer physicians, the company offers Allscripts MyWay, which integrates EHR, PM and claims management features.
   * For practices with four to 25 physicians, Allscripts offers its Professional line of EHR and PM systems, as well as individual products for document management, revenue cycle management and e-prescribing.
   * For practices with 25 or more physicians, or for multi-specialty practices, Allscripts has its Enterprise line of EHR and PM software, the individual products mentioned above and Allscripts Connect, a Web-based portal for viewing and sharing clinical data.
   * Finally, for hospitals, individual Allscripts products cover care management and emergency department management, for patients in the hospital, and home care and post-acute care, for patients who have gone home or to associated facilities.

According to Allscripts, more than 160,000 physicians and approximately 800 hospitals currently use its products.
