Amalga - definition(s)

Amalga - Amalga is a health IT platform from Microsoft for integrating data from disparate sources. Microsoft promotes Amalga as being a “Unified Intelligence System.” The platform is designed to provide health care professionals with real-time clinical, administrative and financial information about patients in a single view.

Amalga consists of three data modeling platforms.

   * Amalga Life Sciences helps research and development organizations see data across departments, disciplines and systems. Data can be modeled and analyzed through an interface that mimics that of Microsoft Office. Data relationships can be determined through queries and semantic discovery.
   * Amalga HIS (Hospital Information System) includes components for managing a hospital’s finances, laboratories, materials, patients and electronic medical records (EMR), among others. HIS is sold to hospitals outside the United States.
   * Amalga Unified Intelligence System, for health care organizations in the United States, offers modules for imaging, research and quality measures. Data is aggregated in a unified platform; from there, according to Microsoft, it can be viewed by anyone within the organization, shared with other health care providers or exported to Microsoft HealthVault, a personal health record (PHR) system.
