Astrolabe - definition(s)

astrolabe - [astronomy] An instrument that measures the vertical angle between a celestial body and the horizontal plane at an observer's position. The astrolabe was replaced by the sextant in the fifteenth century for navigation, but modern versions are still used to determine local time and latitude.
