axis -
(1) [coordinate systems] A line along which measurements are made in order to determine the coordinates of a location.
(2) [coordinate systems] In a spherical coordinate system, the line that directions are related to and from which angles are measured.
(3) [astronomy] In astronomy, the imaginary line through the poles about which a rotating body turns.
