Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT) - definition(s)

CCHIT - Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology - The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT) is an independent, not-for-profit group that certifies electronic health records (EHR) and networks for health information exchange (HIE) in the United States. CCHIT's stated mission is to speed the adoption of health information technology (HIT).

CCHIT was founded in 2004 and began electronic health record (EHR) certification programs in 2006. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 was created to stimulate the economy. The promotion of health IT is a significant focus of the bill, which mandates financial incentives for meaningful use of electronic health records. By mid-2009, CCHIT had certified over 200 EHR products.
