Chronometer - definition(s)

chronometer - [physics] An extremely accurate clock that remains accurate through all conditions of temperature and pressure. The chronometer was developed in the eighteenth century for determining longitude at sea, but its scientific and navigational use has been made obsolete by the invention of quartz and atomic clocks.
