compass -
(1) [navigation] An instrument used to find the direction of north from one's current location, consisting of a case with compass points marked around its edge and a floating magnetic needle that pivots to point to magnetic north.
(2) [cartography] An instrument with two legs connected by a joint, used to draw and measure circles.
