Data mining - The process of finding hidden patterns and relationships in the data.

Analyzing data involves the recognition of significant patterns. Human analysts can see patterns in small data sets. Specialized data mining tools are able to find patterns in large amounts of data. These tools are also able to analyze significant relationships that exist only when several dimensions are viewed at the same time.

Users can ask data questions using standard queries when they know what they're looking for. Queries can be written for questions like this: "Which of our out-of-town customers have given us the most business in the last year?"

Data mining is needed when the user's questions are more vague or general in nature. Data mining questions would include: "What attributes characterize the customers that gave us the most business in the past year?"

Data mining - Data mining is the process of analysing data from different perspectives and summarising it into useful new information. Data mining software is one of a number of tools for interrogating data. It allows users to analyse data from many different dimensions or angles, categorise it, and summarise the relationships identified. Technically, data mining is the process of finding correlations or patterns among dozens of fields in large relational databases. It is commonly used in a wide range of profiling practices, such as marketing, surveillance, fraud detection and scientific discovery. Obviously, for data mining to be effective it is necessary to analyse large amounts of previously collected data.

data mining - Data mining is sorting through data to identify patterns and establish relationships.

Data mining parameters include:

Association - looking for patterns where one event is connected to another event Sequence or path analysis - looking for patterns where one event leads to another later event Classification - looking for new patterns (May result in a change in the way the data is organized but that's ok) Clustering - finding and visually documenting groups of facts not previously known Forecasting - discovering patterns in data that can lead to reasonable predictions about the future (This area of data mining is known as predictive analytics.)

Data mining techniques are used in a many research areas, including mathematics, cybernetics, genetics and marketing. Web mining, a type of data mining used in customer relationship management (CRM), takes advantage of the huge amount of information gathered by a Web site to look for patterns in user behavior.
