Latency - definition(s)

Latency - In a broad sense, delay. The time delay between the moment something is initiated and the moment its first effect begins. More specifically, the time it takes for a packet of data to get from one designated point to another.

Latency - Latency is a time delay between the moment something is initiated and the moment its first effect begins. RAM latency is the amount of time a computer needs to wait to get data from random access memory. Data latency is the delay time for data to be updated in a system. When data latency is reduced or eliminated, it is often said to be in "real time."

Data latency - Usually refers to the time between initiating a request and receiving the answer. For example, the time between running a command and the database being updated or modified.
