Local Area Network (LAN) - definitions

Local Area Network (LAN) - (1) Two or more computing units connected for local resource sharing. (2) A network in which communications are limited to a moderate-size geographic area, such as a single office building, warehouse or campus, and that do not extend across public rights-of-way.

Local Area Network (LAN) - (1) A network covering a relatively small geographic area (usually not larger than a floor or small building). Compared to WANs, LANs are usually characterized by relatively high data rates. (2) Network permitting transmission and communication between hardware devices, usually in one building or complex.

LAN - [computing] Acronym for local area network. Communications hardware and software that connect computers in a small area, such as a room or a building. Computers in a LAN can share data and peripheral devices, such as printers and plotters, but do not necessarily have a link to outside computers.
