NewSQL - NewSQL is a marketing term that started due to NoSQL. The old regime of SQL databases had to reinvent itself, so NewSQL came to being. Other than that, I have no real clue what to do with this NewSQL thing.

NewSQL - NewSQL are relational databases that provide the same scalable performance of NoSQL systems for online transaction processing (OLTP) while still maintaining the ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) guarantees of a traditional databases. Some of them are written from scratch with a distributed architecture in mind, and include distributed concurrency control. Other group of NewSQL databases are systems that are highly optimized storage engines for SQL. These systems provide the same programming interface as SQL, but scale better than built-in engines, such as InnoDB. Examples of these new storage engines include TokuDB and InfiniDB. The thirs dgroup of NewSQL systems provide a sharding middleware layer to automatically split databases across multiple nodes. Examples of this type of system includes dbShards, Scalearc, and ScaleBase.
