Burkina Faso - Example address format

Any address written in a non-native language will be written in French. Deliveries are made only to post office boxes (Boîte Postale, or BP). For larger settlements (Ouagadougou, Bobo-Dioulasso and Ouahigouya), their name is followed by a two-digit sorting code and the same number precedes the post office box number, as in the example above.

As in French, the surname of the person being addressed is usually written in upper case.

Though postal deliveries are only to mailing addresses, street addresses will be found for the use of couriers, visitors etc. As not all streets are named, these may often be descriptive and unstructured using directionals such as “Behind the Cinema”, “Next to the Petrol Station” and “in the vicinity of the Bank”.

Burkina Faso - Postal codes

image

Note: This section last updated 16th January 2022

At the end of 2021, La Poste Burkina Faso announced a postal code system with codes consisting of 5 digits placed in front of the city name on the final line of the address block. The first digit cannot be 0. When this code is used, the sorting code after the city name, and the same code in front of the post office box indicator, are dropped. For example:

Old system:

           01 BP 784
           OUAGADOUGOU 01

New system:

           BP 784
           10010 OUAGADOUGOU

The post office box number may be followed by a post office name.

There is no sign yet of any actual implementation of this code.
