Cook Islands is a New Zealand Self-Governing Territory, consisting of 15 Pacific islands: Aitutaki, Atiu, Manahiki, Mangaia, Manuae, Mauke, Mitiaro, Nassau Island, Palmerston, Penrhyn (Tongareva), Pukapuka Island, Rakahanga, Rarotonga, Suwarrow and Takutea.

Cook Islands - Languages

The national language is English External, spoken by about 700 people. There are 600 speakers of Penrhyn External on Penrhyn Island; 700 speakers of Pukapuka, mainly on Pukapuka Island; about 2 500 speakers of Rakahanga-Manihiki External on the islands with the same names; and almost 17 000 speakers of Rarotongan External, spread throughout the islands, some as a second language.

Each inhabited outer island except Nassau and Suwarrow (governed from Pukapuka) have an island council. Nassau also has an island committee. Uninhabited Manuae is governed from Aitutaki and Takutea from Atiu. At a lower level, villages may have committees
