Streets in urban areas are often numbered, with the same numbers appearing in different districts of the same urban area. The government is working to alter this situation and to give each street a name, allowing house-to-house deliveries.

image

Abu Dhabi is introducing 200000 unique street addresses under the name onwani (“my address”). This involves infrastructural improvements such as street name signs (with building numbers) at each intersection and number plates being affixed to every building, main entrance or wall. Each sign will contain a QR code to allow people to identify their location. Odd numbers will be on the left-hand side of the street as seen from a given point, even numbers on the right. The street names will be based on history and heritage, so the naming process can be slow as suitable names are considered.

Dubai municipality has introduced a point address system called Makani. Each 10-digit Makani number identifies an individual building. The number is shown on a plaque on, or in the lobby of, each building. Large structures, such as shopping malls, have been given one code per entrance.

The emirates of ’Ajman, Al Fujayrah, Ra’s al Khaymah and Umm al Qaywayn have signed agreements to adopt Dubai’s Makani system.

As these are positional codes rather than postal codes in the traditional sense, I do not categorise them as postal codes in this resource.
