Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP) - definition(s)

HITSP - HITSP (Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel) is an organization created to promote standardization and broad scale interoperability among healthcare applications and information systems. The Panel is made up of healthcare experts from both the public and private sectors and includes caregivers, developers, government agencies and end users. HITSP sponsors numerous specifications that define standards for interoperability and information sharing.

Among many others, HITSP Interoperability Specifications (IS) include:

   * the Electronic Health Record (EHR) Laboratory Results Reporting IS, which supports:
   * interoperability between electronic health records and laboratory systems.
   * secure access to laboratory results and documentation.
   * the Biosurveillance IS, which supports the exchange of biosurveillance data among healthcare providers and public health authorities. (Biosurveillance is the ongoing monitoring of health data that could indicate potential disease outbreaks.)
   * the Consumer Empowerment and Access to Clinical Information via Networks IS, which supports the exchange of health-related information between individuals and healthcare providers.

HITSP was founded in October 2005 under contract from the United States Department of Health and Human Services. The Panel is overseen by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in collaboration with strategic partners including Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) and Booz Allen Hamilton.
