Logical Data Model - definitions

Logical Data Model - A Logical Data Model fills in the gap between a Conceptual Data Model and Physical Data Model. While Conceptual Data Models are completely devoid of database-level information, a Logical Data Model stores generic characteristics (such as indexes and foreign keys) without adding anything specific to a single database management system (DBMS). Physical Data Models translate information from a Logical Data Model to designs that are specific to a certain database management system (DBMS).

Logical Data Model - An abstract formal representation of the categories of data and their relationships in the form of a diagram, such as an entity-relationship diagram. A logical data model is process independent, which means that it is fully normalized, and therefore does not represent a process dependent (e.g. access-path) database schema.

Logical Data Model - Actual implementation of a conceptual module in a database. It may take multiple logical data models to implement one conceptual data model. An LDM is a representation of business concepts laid out in a visual format that clearly shows these concepts and their various relationships.
