221 languages are spoken in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a complex geographical pattern. The official language is French External. Widespread languages include: Alur External (500 000 speakers); Bangala External (3 500 000 second-language speakers); Kituba External (4 200 000 speakers); Kongo External (1 000 000 speakers); Lendu External (750 000 speakers); Lingala External (8 400 000 speakers); Luba-Kasai External (6 300 000 speakers); Luba-Shaba External (1 505 000 speakers); Nandi External (903 000 speakers); Ngbaka External (750 000 speakers); Shi External (654 000 speakers); Songe External (1 000 000 speakers); Zaire Swahili External (9 100 000 second-language speakers); Tetela External (750 000 speakers) and Zande External (730 000 speakers).
