Eritrea - Languages

English External is the national language but spoken by few as a first language. There are 450 000 speakers of Afar External; 120 000 of Bedawi External; 70 000 of Bilen External (in and around the town of Keren External); 140 000 of Kunama External; 63 000 of Nara External; 144 000 of Saho External; 683 000 of Tigré External and 1 900 000 of Tigrinya External.

Eritreans do not have family names. Both males and females retain the same names throughout life. The first given name is used in correspondence following the form of address. Some Eritreans use their father’s or grandfather’s given name as a family name/second given name.
