Languages of Algeria

The official languages are Standard Arabic External and Tamazight External. 15 other languages are spoken. The most widespread languages are: Algerian Saharan Spoken Arabic (100 000 speakers); Algerian Spoken Arabic External (20 400 000 speakers); Chaouia External (1 400 000 speakers); French External (110 600 speakers) and Kabyle External (2 537 000 speakers).

Algeria - Forms of address

When Arabic forms of address are being used, the forms of address are spelt slightly differently to those given in the Forms of Address section of this book. They are:

   Mr: Sayed
   Mrs: Sayeda
   Miss: Anisa

French forms of address are also used, and Mr. is often found written instead of M. as an abbreviation for Monsieur, but this is incorrect.

Personal names in Algeria

In Algeria, personal names are usually written with the family name preceding the personal name in this way:

   Sayed Hamden Hassan

where Hassan is the given name and Hamden the family name. Women usually take their husband’s name upon marriage.

Lawyers are addressed as Maître.

Address format of Algeria

Addresses written in Latin script are usually written in French and are similar in format to French addresses. Their format is:

   Name
   number[, ]thoroughfare type[ ]Thoroughfare name
   postal code[ ]SETTLEMENT

For example:

Thoroughfare types are written starting with a lower-case letter. For lists of thoroughfare types and other address component information, please refer to the chapter on France.

When written in Latin script, this is written as Boîte Postale, abbreviated to BP.

Postal codes (Code Postal) consist of a block of 5 digits. The first two digits indicate the wilaya (department), the last three the delivery office. The first two digits can range from 01 to 48.

The creation of 10 new wilayas in December 2019 removed the previous neat one-to-one correspondence between wilaya and postal code area. The following list shows the wilayas External with the first two digits of their postal codes:

Algeria - Telephone numbers

Algerian geographic numbers, when called from abroad, have a total length of 9 digits; mobile numbers have a total length of 10 digits. Mobile numbers commence with the area codes 55, 66, 69, 77 or 79.
